How Long Does Stairlift Installation Take?
What’s the Timescale for an Installation?
It is one of the most common questions we get asked before a stairlift is fitted. People want to know how long the installer will be in their home, whether they need to clear the staircase, and when they will be able to use the stairlift for the first time.
The short answer is that most stairlift installations take between two and four hours. But that depends on the type of stairlift, the complexity of your staircase, and a few other factors we will cover below.
Straight Stairlift Installation: Typically 2 to 3 Hours
A straight stairlift – fitted to a staircase that runs in a single uninterrupted line – is the quickest and most straightforward type to install. In most cases, a straight stairlift installation takes between two and three hours from start to finish.
The rail is cut to fit the exact length of your staircase on site. It is bolted directly to the stair treads rather than the wall, which means no major structural work is required and no damage is done to your walls or skirting boards. Once the rail is in place, the stairlift unit is fitted to it, the seat and footrest are attached, and the installer runs through the electrical connection and charging points.
By the time the installer leaves, the stairlift is fully operational and you will have been shown how to use every function safely.
Curved Stairlift Installation: Typically 3 to 4 Hours
A curved stairlift – fitted to a staircase with a bend, landing, or change of direction – takes a little longer to install. Most curved installations take between three and four hours.
The reason it takes longer is that a curved stairlift rail is custom-manufactured to the exact shape of your staircase. Every bend and angle is measured precisely before the rail is made. By the time your installation day arrives, the rail has been built specifically for your staircase, so the fitting itself is still a clean and straightforward process – it just involves more components and more time to align and secure them correctly.
Like a straight stairlift, no structural or wall work is required. The rail fixes to the stair treads and everything is done in a single visit.
What Happens on Installation Day?
Knowing what to expect on the day can make the whole process feel much less daunting, particularly for older residents or those who have not had major home adaptations before.
Before the installer arrives
You do not need to do much preparation. Clear the staircase of any loose items – shoes, bags, anything stored on the stairs — and make sure there is reasonable access to the bottom and top of the staircase. That is all that is needed.
During the installation
The installer will carry the components into your home and lay them out before beginning the fit. The rail is fixed to the stairs using floor brackets that sit on the stair treads. No drilling into walls, no painting over holes, no mess left behind.
The stairlift requires a standard 13-amp plug socket near the top or bottom of the stairs – most homes already have one in a suitable position. If not, a qualified electrician can add one beforehand, which your installer can advise on when they carry out your pre-installation survey.
During the installation, you can go about your day in the rest of the house. There is no need to stay in the hallway. The installer will let you know when everything is ready for the demonstration.
The handover and demonstration
Once the stairlift is fitted and tested, the installer will walk you through how to use it. This includes how to operate the controls – both the joystick or buttons on the armrest and the remote controls – how to fold and unfold the seat, footrest and armrests, and what to do if the stairlift stops mid-journey for any reason.
You will also be given the opportunity to ride the stairlift yourself before the installer leaves, so that you feel completely confident using it independently. If you have family members or carers who will also be using it, they are welcome to be present for the demonstration.
Does the Stairlift Block the Staircase?
This is a concern many people raise before installation, particularly in households where the stairlift user is not the only person using the stairs.
When the stairlift is parked at the top or bottom of the stairs and the seat, footrest and armrests are folded up, the rail takes up a relatively small amount of space on the staircase. Most staircases in standard UK homes are wide enough to walk past a parked stairlift without difficulty.
Building regulations require that a stairlift must leave a minimum clear width of 450mm on the staircase when the seat and footrest are folded. In practice, most installations leave considerably more space than this. You can read more about building regulation guidance for home adaptations on Gov.uk.
If you have a particularly narrow staircase, we also offer a range of narrow stairlifts designed specifically for tighter spaces. This is something we assess during your pre-installation survey and we will always advise you honestly about the best solution for your staircase.
How Soon Can the Stairlift Be Installed After Ordering?
For straight stairlifts, lead times are typically short. In many cases we can arrange installation within a few days of your order being confirmed – sometimes sooner if your situation is urgent.
For curved stairlifts, the rail needs to be manufactured to the measurements taken during your survey, which adds time. Lead times for curved stairlifts are typically two to four weeks from survey to installation.
If you need a stairlift urgently – for example, following a hospital discharge or a sudden change in mobility – a stairlift rental is often the fastest solution. A rental straight stairlift can frequently be installed within 24 to 48 hours of enquiry, giving you immediate safe access to your full home while longer-term arrangements are put in place.
Will the Installation Cause Any Disruption or Damage?
Stairlift installation is one of the least disruptive home adaptations you can have done. There is no building work, no dust, no wet plaster and no need to redecorate afterwards.
The rail brackets fix to the stair treads using fixings that are specifically designed to be removable. When the stairlift is eventually removed – whether because it is no longer needed or because you are moving home – the fixings are taken out and the small holes left behind can be filled with a basic filler if required. Most people find the holes are barely noticeable under normal circumstances.
Carpeted stairs are not a problem. The brackets fix through the carpet to the tread beneath, and the carpet is not cut or damaged in the process.
What About Aftercare and Servicing?
Installation is just the beginning. A stairlift is a piece of mechanical equipment that benefits from regular servicing to keep it running smoothly and safely.
We recommend an annual service for all stairlifts we install. A service visit typically takes around an hour and covers a full inspection of the mechanical and electrical components, lubrication of the drive system, testing of all safety features, and any minor adjustments needed to keep the ride smooth and quiet.
All stairlifts we supply come with a warranty as standard. Our rental stairlifts include full maintenance and 24-hour call-out cover as part of the monthly rental – so if anything goes wrong at any time, you are covered at no extra cost. We also offer an extended warranty for added long-term peace of mind.
If budget is a consideration, our reconditioned stairlifts start from just £795 and come with exactly the same aftercare and warranty cover as our new models – a smart way to get a quality stairlift installed at a lower cost.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a stairlift be installed on any staircase?
Most staircases in standard UK homes are suitable for a stairlift. Very narrow staircases, or those with extremely tight bends, may present challenges – but these are assessed individually during your survey. In the vast majority of cases, a suitable solution exists.
Does someone need to be home during installation?
Yes, an adult needs to be present throughout the installation. This is both for access purposes and because the installer will need to carry out the handover demonstration with you at the end.
What if I need the stairlift removed later?
Removal is straightforward and quick – typically taking less than an hour. We offer a removal service for all stairlifts we have supplied. For rental customers, removal is included at no extra cost whenever you no longer need the stairlift.
Is a stairlift suitable if I live alone?
Yes. Stairlifts are designed to be operated independently and safely by the user. The controls are simple, the safety features are comprehensive, and the stairlift will not move unless deliberately operated. Many of our customers in Cheshire live alone and use their stairlift confidently every day.
